Basic Features and Cost of the Breville BOV650XL
Though it measures in at 10x17x14 inches with a slightly smaller internal capacity of .6 cu ft, the Breville BOV650XL toaster oven still maintains an 1800-watt power output and is designed to efficiently cook a wide variety of foods. It looks nearly identical to Breville’s larger model, as it is also made of stainless steel with a silvery chrome finish. However, since it is compact, it is much more affordable at around $175.
Easy to Use and Clean – Breville BOV650XL
The Breville BOV650XL is easy to operate: to program the oven, the user simply needs to first press the “function” button and choose one of eight pre-set cooking modes, and then set both the time and temperature on one dial. When the oven preheats to the set-temperature, the timer will start. This differs from the design of the BOV800XL, on which time and temperature are programmed on two different dials. One helpful function is that the Breville BOV650XL’s LCD read-out screen lights up orange when the oven is pre-heating and turns blue when heated. Additional buttons offer defrost and temperature conversion options, while a removable crumb tray makes the oven easy to clean.
The Element IQ
The Element IQ represents the unique “smart oven” technology that sets the Breville BOV650XL apart from the competition. While most toaster ovens can heat up quickly, their limited heating capabilities can result in burnt or undercooked food. The Breville BOV650XL expands beyond a simple on-off function by automatically adjusting the heat inside according to individual cooking tasks. Despite its smaller size and the fact that it lacks the “warm up” option of the larger version, the Breville BOV650XL still offers eight different cooking modes: broil, toast, roast, pizza, reheat, cookie, bake, and toast.
Versatile Functionality
The number of different available cooking features makes the Breville BOV650XL a versatile compact option. It fits most 10-inch pans and muffin tins, and is also ideal for cooking pizza, cookies, breads, and sandwiches. However, the Breville BOV650XL lacks the convection fan present in the BOV800XL, which may mean that it takes longer to cook various foods, and may produce less even cooking than the larger model.
Add-Ons and Accessories
The Breville company offers 10” bake pans, broil pans, and pizza stones that are designed specifically to fit the Breville BOV650XL model. A space-saving bamboo chopping board made to fit perfectly on top of the Breville BO650XL is also offered as an additional accessory. It is, of course, possible to purchase accessories and pans elsewhere, but keep in mind that they may not fit or work as well as the tools crafted especially for the Breville BOV650XL.
Caveats and Cautions
As a machine that can accommodate 12” pizza pans, the Breville BOV650XL is actually larger than most toaster ovens deemed “compact.” Thus, it is important to carefully measure counter space to determine if the Breville BOV650XL will fit. Since the Breville BOV650XL lacks a convection fan (the part most apt to break down), there is less chance of experiencing any product malfunction; still, should any problems arise, the extended one year warranty and excellent customer service department should lessen the hassle of part replacement.
For a smaller toaster oven, the Breville BOV650XL performs nearly as well as the Breville BOV800XL, while also saving money and counter space. The slightly limited capabilities do not interfere with its high-functioning smart oven technology, which may serve to make toasters and microwaves obsolete in many households.
